'Battlestar Galactica' Spin-Off May Be Resurrected

Source: Buddy TV

The writers' strike has helped all sorts of projects get off the ground, though unfortunately most of them have been terrible reality shows that obliterate brain cells. However, there are some scripted shows such as NBC's upcoming Quarterlife, which was originally an online series, that may never have made it to air without the striking writers. These are desperate times for the networks, and desperate times can lead to the strangest programming decisions.

Viewers who are feeling deprived of original programming will be happy to hear that the script-starved Sci Fi Channel may be ready to take another look at Caprica, the proposed Battlestar Galactica spin-off from executive producer Ronald D. Moore. The script for the two-hour pilot of the series, which would act as a prequel to the events in Battlestar Galactica, was completed back in 2006, but the Sci Fi Channel chose to pass on it at the time.

In a recent issue of TV Guide, Sci Fi Channel Vice President Mark Stern stated, "I just got a call from NBC-Universal. They want us to take another look at the project."

Though he didn't elaborate any further, the renewed interest in Caprica comes as a shock to Ronald D. Moore, who claims he hasn't heard anything from the network. In a statement to Ain't It Cool News, Moore said, "Despite the rumors to the contrary, there's still no word on Caprica. I have yet to get a call from the network about it, and if they're really considering it, they're keeping it to themselves."

This is definitely a strange situation, but just because Moore hasn't received word from the network is no reason to give up hope. It's possible that the plans to resurrect Caprica are at such an early stage that they simply haven't contacted the BSG mastermind yet.

As originally conceived, the series was to be set on the planet Caprica about 50 to 70 years before the events that take place in Battlestar Galactica. The show was going to follow the family life of Joseph Adama, father of William Adama, who is played by Edward James Olmos in the current series. The spin-off would deal with the creation of the Cylon race and the events leading into the First Cylon War.

The Sci Fi Channel was originally scared away from Caprica due to the low ratings of Battlestar Galactica, as well as the fact that the show was planned to be very story arc heavy. The network has always been a fan of more standalone episodes, and even pressured Moore to add more standalones to the third season of BSG. This tactic backfired, as both fans and critics lambasted Galactica for a run of subpar episodes.

In my opinion, the Sci Fi Channel should absolutely pick up Caprica. Aside from a couple of awesome shows, the network is known for having scripted programming that is a boil on humanity's rear end. Also, let's not forget the apocalypse of quality that's known as the Sci Fi Original Movie. The network is going to need a smart, buzzworthy show after BSG exits the airwaves, and Caprica is their best hope. They were idiots not to pick it up the first time, and they'd look even more ridiculous if they passed it over again.

BattleStar Galactica Season 4 Spoilers

Source: BuddyTV

The premiere of the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica is still a few months away, but eager and excited fans have long been buzzing, trading speculations and minor spoilers on the web. While it's now easy to come by titles for episodes of the upcoming season, specific information regarding the installments are still quite limited. There are, however, some details available on the fourth season premiere episode, which is slated to air on April 4.

Die-hard fans of Battlestar Galactica most likely already know the title of the first episode of the new season, but we'll say it anyway for the benefit of those who haven't been updated. The episode is called “He That Believeth in Me,” and is lifted from John 11:25-26, which says, “Jesus said unto her, ‘I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And so whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”

As seen on the a preview special on a Canadian show Hypaspace, “He That Believeth in Me” picks up from where the third season finale, "Crossroads, Part II," ended. A scene shows Lee (Jamie Bamber) telling Kara (Katee Sackhoff) – aka Starbuck – that he saw her Viper explode, to which Kara replies that he didn't. She then tells him not to lose her “this time” and they both fly back into the battle.

Starbuck's seemingly relaxed return coincides with what show star Michael Trucco, who plays Anders, said in an interview with Cult Times late last year. Apparently, Starbuck thinks she's only been away for six hours, when in reality it's been two months.

"Lee grabs her first and gives her this big bear hug, and the Anders comes up to her and he's got tears of joy in his eyes,” Trucco said. “Of course Starbuck is confused and is like 'Hey, what the hell is going on?'”

Trucco also said that although he is happy to have his wife back, his joy “is instantly replaced with fear. He's wondering 'Does she recognize I'm a cylon? Do I want her to recognize that? Do I want to tip her off?" Anders is also tasked by the other closet cylons – Tigh, Tori and Tyrol – to “pick Kara's brain for information,” making Starbuck's return even more bittersweet for Anders.

Finally, Trucco revealed that a particular scene shows Anders telling Kara that he'd still love her even if she was a cylon, but her reaction isn't exactly what Anders is hoping for.

"So their relationship has become strained to say the least, and it continues to be so throughout the early part of season four,” Trucco explained.

Now, going back to the Hypaspace preview, show cast members gave general details of what fans can expect from the upcoming season, with Alessandro Juliani, who plays Lt. Felix Gaeta, saying that the main plotline of Battlestar's final season is finding out who the identity of the 12th Cylon. Sackhoff, meanwhile, said that she has been told from the get-go that she is “not a Cylon,” and executive producer Ron Moore confirmed this information via the portrait, which was reminiscent of the Last Supper, he released to Entertainment Weekly recently.

There is one scene in the preview special, however, that has Mary McDonnell's Roslin's questioning Natalie, another version of Six, if Kara is, indeed, the 12th Cylon.

Sci Fi To Air Two Battlestar Galactica Specials In March

It looks like Battlestar Galactica fans are going to have the opportunity to take a little refresher course on the series before the fourth season premieres this April. According to BuddyTV.com, the Sci Fi Channel is set to premiere two BSG specials to get fans of the series revved up for the new season.

The first special is called Battlestar Galactica: Revisted and will recap the first three seasons of the series. Considering how long it’s been since we’ve had any new episodes, an extremely condensed run-through of the previous seasons will certainly come in handy. That said, I’m not sure I’d recommend people who are new to the series to try and watch it as a way to see what they missed. I remember when Sci fi did one of these recap specials before the third season premiered and at that time, I hadn’t seen the first two seasons. I was totally new to the show and thought that watching the recap would help get me caught up so that I could jump into the third season with everyone else. In the end though, it didn’t do any good because I had no idea what was going on throughout the whole thing and ended up having to watch the first two seasons in their entirety anyway. I don’t regret that because I absolutely love the show but I do regret trying to watch the recap special because it spoiled a couple major plot twists. So, if you’re considering jumping on the BSG bandwagon, I recommend you start by renting the miniseries. If you like that, you’ll love the show and you still have time to get caught up on the first few seasons before the fourth season starts.

The second special set to air on Sci Fi is Battlestar Galactica: The Phenomenon. This one will center on the response of the fans and critics to the series over the years. Nothing like two BSG specials to get us psyched up and geeked out over the new season!

The specials will air back to back on Friday, March 28th at 10:00 p.m. (exactly one week before the fourth season premieres on April 4th).

Caprica Back on Schedule?

Source: Movieweb

Tv Guide's "Sci-Fi Preview" is reporting that the Sci-Fi Channel may put the original Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica into production. This is happening due to the lack of scripts because of the writers' strike.

SciFi Channel vice president Mark Stern stated, "I just got a call from NBC-Universal. They want us to take another look at the project." The prequel will take place a century before the contemporary version of the series. It will reveal the inventor of the Cylons, and deal with Bill Adama's father.

No production start date has been set at this time.

'Battlestar Galactica' Action Figures Hit the Shelves

Source: BuddyTV
Fans of Battlestar Galactica who can't get enough of the hit Sci Fi Channel series now have a chance to take their favorite characters home. Diamond Select Toys recently released action figures based on the show's most popular characters, and four more are set to hit shelves in March. The company also plans to release toy versions of ships that have been seen on the series. Diamond Select was a natural choice to bring the Battlestar Galactica crew to the collectible realm, as they've already released lines based on popular shows such as Stargate SG-1 and Star Trek.

The first group of figures released included Lee Adama, clad not in a towel but in his Viper uniform, as well as Number Six in her patented red dress, and everyone's favorite nugget, Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza. Lt. Helo, Chief Tyrol, and Sam Anders are also available. The next set will feature Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in her flight suit, a Cylon Centurion, Admiral Helena Cain, and Lt. Louanne "Kat" Katraine. As for ship replicas, Diamond Select plans to release some beginning in April. The first releases will include statues of a Cylon Raider, a Viper, and both a regular and damage scarred Battlestar Galactica.

Diamond Select has also created a line of two-inch tall BSG "minimate" figures, which includes various characters from both the new Battlestar Galactica and the original series.

Aside from the aforementioned shows, Diamond Select has also released figures based on 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Serenity. They have an uncanny ability for catching the likenesses of the actors and translating them to the seven-inch figures. You'd swear you were holding your very own Jamie Bamber or Tricia Helfer in the palm of your hand.

If you want to pick up your own Battlestar Galactica action figure, head on over to DiamondSelectToys.com. Each figure sells for the price of $15.99.

Moore Offers New Clues About Battlestar Galactica

Source: Cinema Blend

If you’re like me, one of the things you’ve been looking forward to most about 2008 is the premiere of the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica. It feels like its been forever since we got any new information about the series. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we finally have a few exciting tidbits to mull over for the next few months. If you don’t want to know any spoilers about the upcoming season of BSG, read no further!

In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, the magazine included this picture spread across two pages. BSG exec-producer Ron Moore was nice enough to offer a little clue about each of the people listed in the photo. The juiciest clue was for #10. As you can see in the photo, there is an empty space there. Moore brought up the fact that they haven’t revealed the final Cylon yet. EW’s Adam V. Vary responded by asking, “Does that mean the people already at the table aren’t the final Cylon?” To this, Moore said, “You ferreted that out pretty slyly. I didn’t really want to give that away.” That means that we can deduce that Starbuck, Lee, Baltar, Roslin, Adama and Helo are not going to be revealed as the fifth Cylon.

In case you noticed the extra Six in the photo (#2), that’s Natalie. According to Moore, she’s another version of Six who will play a role in the new season as a Cylon who is leading other Cylons with a separate agenda from the rest of the toasters. Moore also made mention of Caprica-Six’s center spot, saying, “Baltar’s Six has proclaimed that she is delivering the gospel of the [Cylons] one true god, so it seemed natural to place her at the center of the photo.”

You’ll also note that Helo and Sharon are giving someone to the right of them the stink-eye. Moore wouldn’t say who it was they were looking at but he did say that “the person they’re looking at is definitely reacting.” As for Starbuck and Anders, Moore pointed out that while Kara's return to life and Anders' finding out he’s a Cylon definitely complicates their relationship, it should be noted that Anders is the only one embracing Kara. So does this mean that he’s the only one who trusts her or is happy to have her back? It would explain why it looks like she’s been tossed in a cell in this trailer for the new season.

For the full article check out Entertainment Weekly’s latest issue. It’s the one with Matthew Fox on the cover.
